“Job ads don’t work”
Posted by Mitch on 10th March 2016

I hear this a lot from recruiters.
Yet it doesn’t seem to stop them posting lots of job ads.
Clearly they’ve bought into the ‘chuck enough mud’ recruitment principle – made popular by the invention of job boards.
Another popular phrase I hear from recruiters is “We don’t advertise much because we’re really headhunters.”
Yeah, right. Presumably these headhunters just read-out the job spec when they call these hard to find, talented, passive A-players.
So, in keeping with a blogging style that was once described as “three cords and the truth”, here’s the bottom line on posting job adverts:
Recruitment advertising only doesn’t work for people who are bad at it.
For everyone else, it accounts for a significant percentage of all the jobs they fill.
The issue gets complicated only because many of the people who are bad at it, think they’re good at it.
If you’re one of those people, feel free to send me one of your job ads for a free critique. I’ll be gentle*.
If you know you’re bad at it and would like to stop, you could check this out.
*Degrees of gentleness may go down as well as up.

Also the “significant” in many cases above also means “majority”. :)

Here is the thing Mitch - your job adverts for MRL are up there with the worst job adverts i have ever had the misfortune to see. Honestly they look like a child has had a go on microsoft paint.
Anyway i’m sure you will have a witty comment for this and all your strange fanboys will have something to say too.
*Awaits swear words*

‘John’, thanks for taking the time to express your thoughts.
Hopefully you’ll understand the futility in responding to anyone that prefers to post comments anonymously?
Apologies for not providing any wit or profanity.
