To all those people getting giddy about the “power of social media”
Posted by Mitch on 26th October 2012
If you still talk shit, people will still ignore you.
They’ll just ignore you in more places.
Seriously, that’s all it means.
The people who are great at social media now, were great with the more traditional (aka more expensive) stuff because social media only democratises marketing for the people who already had some talent in that area.
Everyone else needs a rethink.

Brilliant. Some times few words can say so much. I love it.

Care to define “great at social media” for us “regular” people? Social media is the biggest crock of hot air I’ve seen since the Hindenburg - and we all know what happened there.
I’ve sat and watched as so many experts have built these giant followings - and yet I’ve never been quite sure what their message is.
Recruiters do know - that at the end of the day - the better have a client ready to pay for their services, right? So regarding message - just being one with a megaphone does not equate to sendouts and placements.
It’s still OK to talk about placements, isn’t it? I mean - their still rather popular in my firm.

Hi Jerry (aka regular person)
Social Media = Talking to people

Personally I love all the Social Media Guru’s in the recruitment industry. The vast majority of which spend most of their time re-hashing the same old tripe under a different guise. A good example is all the Recruitment Industry Leaders (many of which have never even owned a recruitment business) who publish stuff like “Cold Calling is Dead - Learn the Secrets of How to Beat the Gate Keeper” and similar rubbish.
Some of them even go on to publish entire collections of LinkedIn for Recruiters - Learn the Secrets of How to Double Your Revenue in 15 Step by Step Full Colour Exclusive DVD Tutorials - only $9.99c - give me a break!

Geez Mitch, took a while for you to get to the point didn’t it? Couldn’t agree more - if you yell loud without a good message, you’re just a loud prat.

I don’t know about this. People talk crap and get very popular, be it on soc or elsewhere. It’s the weirdo who gets the attention. The informed, measured, and ultimately correct point of view gets ignored, because it’s boring.
